Changing Status of Women in Modern India

Women are the Building Block of Family. They are the thread that ties up the whole family. Women build Family, Family builds Home, Home a Society, and at last Society transforms Nation.

Introduction

Women are the Building Block of Family. They are the thread that ties up the whole family. Women build Family, Family builds Home, Home a Society, and at last Society transforms Nation. According to Hindu Mythology, Goddess Laxmi and Saraswati don’t come in Houses where women are ill treated. State can only be developing when the status of all genders will improve, Country cannot progress unless the condition of women rises.

Women in Earlier Phase

Since the beginning of time women were considered as inferiors. Even though they are not physically stronger than men, they are emotionally much stronger than men. Indian society became male dominated society and women were considered as men’s slaves. Gradually they become weaker in the society because men used to keep women beneath their thumb. They were coerced to heed man blindly as a dumb cattle living under four walls of house. Earlier the elders of the family were not happy with the birth of a female child and on the other hand they became so happy if the child born was male. They thought male children will become a source of money whereas female children will prove consumers of money. They were forced to live under the influence of parents before marriage whereas under influence of husbands after marriage. They were only perceived as Homemakers of the Family. Women were the unfortunate victim of patriarchal society which has harboured the violence against women in the shapes of customs and norms like female infanticide, sati system, domestic violence, dowry and many more.

Women in Recent Phase

The gradual positive swift in the Indian society have been proved to be favourable for the Women status. Now the women are raising their voice and helping in shaping the fortune of the country. From the position of a Homemaker to the field of life there is no sphere which remains unvanquished by Indian women.

Notable Positive Changes took place in society are-

Women are excelling in every arena: Politics, Business, Administrators, Doctors, Engineers, Sports and much more.
Female activists are also come forward over issues as Female infanticide, Gender Discrimination, Women’s safety, Dowry. Many Female writers also emerged in society.
Women also hold Right to Speech and Expression and Right to Equality.
They have freedom to choose their life partners of their own will.
They are getting a chance to complete their education at a degree level.
Government has also set up a legal age for girls to get married i.e. 18. They are discouraged to marry at an early phase of life.
Females are entitled to a maximum of 12 weeks of Maternity leave.
Gender Prediction Test to reveal the sex of foetus has made illegal.
Many Schemes has also started by government to encourage parents having female child and to get rid of malpractices like female infanticide.
Various Scholarships are also provided to women to achieve in the academic arena.
Government, NGOs, State Governments, and Self Help Groups are also offering financial support in Higher Education, Business Start ups and any other initiatives.
Reservation is also provided in educational institutions, job positions and Parliament.
They are also enjoying the ‘Ladies First Facility’ in different fields.
The Government of India declared 2001 as the year of women’s empowerment. The National Policy for the empowerment of women was also passed in 2001.

Darker Side

Despite all the transformation that took place in today’s era women’s condition still needs a lot to be improved. On the one hand women are touching the heights of sky and on other they are still the victims of Male Dominated Society. All laws that have been passed today need to be implemented in Person’s mentality rather than only just on paper. Despite passing the Equal Remuneration Act, female are still not paid equal for their work. Heinous Crimes like Rape, Acid attack, Sexual Molestation are still prevailing in our Society and as a consequence parents fear to send their daughters outside alone. They don’t prefer to send their daughters far to build a career as roads are not safe for women especially at night. Families still want to bless their sons. Rural areas are more prone than urban zones. Evil practices like Dowry, Female Foeticide, and Domestic Violence are in larger figures than urban counterparts. Women are also found less educated in Rural Zones.

Measures should be taken to uplift the status of women in society are as follows :-

More emphasis on Martial Arts should be done.
Ultrasound and Scan centres carry out diagnostic techniques that reveal the sex of foetus should be liable for heavy punishments.
Laws need to be made stricter for crime committers.
Legal age for girls to get married should be raised to 21.
Marital Rape should be made a Criminal offence.
Heavy damages should be imposed on shops selling acid that don’t have license.

Steady transformation in the status of women has been taking place as compared to the early era but still a lot more remains to be achieved. Now women come out from the four walls of their house and play multi- dimensional roles. They have occupied the dignified position in Family and Society. However Crime free society for women is still a challenge. Article 15 ensuring Right to Equality needs to be implemented properly. They should be made bold and Self reliant. Instead of tolerating them, they should take stand against injustice. Women’s day is not celebrated to exalt the charm of women but to create awareness about women’s safety in public.

Increasing women’s role in leadership in global health

All around the globe, women face premature death, beats the disease burden due to gender inequalities, this reflects the discrimination to nutrition, education, and health. Women, being the pillar of society, stand round the clock improving the health condition of their families and communities around the globe. Still, they haven’t been given any right to fulfill their desires. In this 21^st century, where we all are working together to achieve UHC (Universal Health Coverage), one should also focus on SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) no. 3 which states “Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages” and no.5 which states “Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls”.

When there exist disparities in the basic services, it is not surprising to see the women facing discrimination in the formal sector also. Most high authority positions are held by men only and not women which in itself is a big hindrance towards women’s health issues. It is an important step to be taken worldwide as women leaders support health facilities, ANC (Antenatal Care), immunization, maternal nutrition, adolescent health as being in the shoes of the sufferer only things can be felt. Many past studies have shown the neglect caused by gender discrimination with regard to even her birth to her upbringing, education, nutrition, employment and, other opportunities. Addressing this step will bring major changes to a woman’s life.

Global Health

The term “Global Health” is a very vast and broad term that has many skills contained in it such as physical health, leadership, cultural understanding, team-work, etc. Here a woman lacks the opportunities both in the formal and informal sectors. As the ladder of career comes in one’s life, the percentage of women drastically decreases as gender inequality plays a major role.

There are few obstacles that exists in every women’s life both in urban/rural or rich /poor settings-

Safety

Health and Nutrition – Gender inequality is a risk factor for the female population. Pregnant women are at higher risk of infection due to poor prenatal, antenatal, postnatal care and less number of institutional deliveries.

Gender inequality for career inclination – Female faces discrimination at work; it is more frequent at rural or poor settings. Men are given priority for high authority positions, getting more salary whereas women are always that she can’t handle high posts as she can’t work for more hours/night hours. Women get less promotion due to the same. Finance is also one of the hindrances for the women’s career as family supports and is willing to spend money on males rather than on female’s education. They are not allowed to pursue higher education as per their choice.

Career vs Family – There comes a most critical stage in every woman’s life where on one side she has her family and on the other side is her career, ambitions. They are left in a position to choose between both which causes mental stress. Being well educated on one side and having the desire to keep family intact on the other side, always a female in dilemma to choose. But a female upbringing is always made to sacrifice, she has been taught throughout life to take care of her family first and keep her desires aside.

Safety – Due to the increase incidence of sexual violence, women’s safety is a major concern both in the office and domestic sectors. Sexual assaults are increasing which is hampering women’s safety both indoors and outdoors.

Possible solutions to these obstacles are as follows-

To strengthen our Education System – Our education system is way more limited for poor or rural settings. Children living in such areas have to travel a lot to study in schools. Government/Investors/Donors should invest more in the health sector or budget. Efficient allocation of the budget for youth , which is the future of our country, will bring desired outcomes.
Training – Every woman should be given training for skills such as management, leadership, mentoring, acquiring technical knowledge like a research project, etc. A sufficient grant should be assigned for the same which will provide scholarship to the female and financial constraint will not be a hindrance further.
Chance to be a Role Model – Coaches have a big influence on their team members. Students used to follow their coaches in how they work, what strategies they use. Female coaches are very limited, if a female will be given a chance to be a mentor or a coach, it will be a big step towards the change. As they help their mentees to make balance between their career and families. Many organizations give opportunities to women to discuss on big platforms like seminars, conferences, webinars, etc. regarding career management. It is one of the factors that motivates other women to open up.
Giving utmost care to Pregnant Ladies – Increasing the tenure of maternity leaves, will give women the freedom to join their office back after their child gets older. Also, it helps reduce post-pregnancy complications. They need to be funded as well.
Insurances/Medical Support – Covering women’s health by providing insurance to them and their family members. Apart from health, covering their travel insurance which helps them to travel without any concern.

Increasing women’s participation in global health is a critical and feasible step to take for the betterment of women’s health all around the globe. A small step or investment in this direction will change the recent practice and help to improve the condition, health and state of women worldwide.
