Social media is a tool that is becoming quite popular these days because of its user-friendly features. The 21st Century can be described as a “boom” period for social media. The use of social media is ubiquitous and cuts across all age groups, social classes and cultures.

The youth is especially one of the most dominant users of social media. However, the increased use of these sites is accompanied by privacy issues and ethical concerns. Ultimate privacy in the social media domain is very difficult as these media are designed for sharing information.

The weak individual privacy safeguards in the space have resulted in unethical and undesirable behaviour resulting in privacy and security breaches.

INTRODUCTION

Social media is a collective term for websites and applications that focus on communication, community-based input, interaction, content sharing and collaboration.

People use social media to stay in touch and interact with friends, families and various communities. There are many forms of social platforms including blogs, micro-blogs, wikis, social networking sites, photo sharing sites, instant messaging, video sharing sites, podcasts, widgets, virtual world and many more.

Social media has proven to be one of the most effective mediums for the dissemination of information to various audiences. The power of this medium is phenomenal and ranges from its ability to overturn governments, mobilize protest, assist with getting support from humanitarian, organised political campaigns, and organised groups to delay the passing of legislation (as in the case with the Copyright Bill in Canada), etc. Social networking offers a wide range of opportunities that were non-existent before technology.

ETHICS

Ethics is the concept of what is good, bad, right and wrong. In social media, the right ethic is equal to the right perspective. In other words, it can be described as the moral philosophy of an individual or group.

Ethics can also be used to refer to any classification or philosophy of moral values or principles that guide the actions of an individual or group. There is a famous saying “YOU ARE WHAT YOU SHARE”.

With all technology, several challenges can make the use of social media unpleasant.

The three main principles of social media ethics are:

Authenticity
Transparency
Communication

Making inappropriate comment

PRIVACY

The tremendous growth of social media has given platforms extraordinary access and influence in the lives of users. Technology has reduced the gap between professional and personal spaces and this often results in information exposure to the wrong audience. The reduction in the separation of professional and personal spaces can affect image management.

Privacy on social networking sites is dependent on the users only because sharing information is the primary way of participating in social communities. Privacy in social networking sites is “multifaceted”.

While there are enormous benefits that can be derived from the effective use of social media there are some unknown unavailable risks that are involved in its use. Much attention should therefore be given to content that is being shared.

Social networks are becoming the platform for hackers and other perpetrators of antisocial behaviour. These platforms offer large volumes of data and information ranging from an individual‘s date of birth, place of residence, work or business, to information about family and other personal activities. In many cases, users unintentionally disclose information that can be both dangerous and inappropriate. Information regarding activities on social media can have far-reaching negative implications for one’s future.

Protecting privacy in today’s networked society can be a significant challenge. The digital revolution has indeed distorted the views of privacy. However, there should be a clear distinction between what should be seen by the general public and what should be limited to a selected group.

If users of these networks start paying attention to privacy settings and the type of information shared and adhere to universal, fundamental, moral values such as mutual respect and kindness, many privacy and ethical issues can be avoided.

The use of social media should be governed by moral and ethical principles that can be applied and result in harmonious relationships regardless of race, culture, or religious persuasion.

How does it start?

Hate spreads like a virus on social media, from one person to another, from one country to another and from one continent to another. Hate may be a word which is used very often, but the real thing is more than a word. It is a feeling created in people’s minds by the things posted on social media. People when they open their phone\laptop they are seeing various types of hate, few are even responsible for it.

Let me explain a few things about social media and hate on the social media. First thing first, Facebook is a platform where people express their views and share information. It is a place where people can express their views and share information. Certain views are not tolerated on Facebook and are removed.

Is Content The Only Reason Behind Hate?

Most of the time we don’t even care about the content we are seeing. But what if you loved someone who is gay, or straight, or maybe your best friend is making fun of a certain political party. Your reaction probably will be pretty stupid and maybe you will say some hurtful things too. But what about someone who is making fun of your religion, race, or gender.

Social media is a place where people can share their views, content and photos. But sometimes people may share things which are not nice, however nice things may also be shared. It is a place where people express their views and share information. Certain views are not tolerated on social media and are removed.

Laws For Hate Spreading On Social Media:

It is easier to spread hate than love in this society. For 2 years this country has faced much loss in terms of economy, people and jobs. Many people had to suffer a great loss in their families, and some of them are yet to come out of that trauma. At such times, social media was the one that kept everyone together. Through which we could share information, and talk with our friends and family. But few people use it as a weapon.

In India, it is an offence to publish any material with intent to cause hatred or ill-will or to incite violence or the commission of an offence, against any person or group of persons on account of their religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, caste or community. This offence is punishable with imprisonment of up to three years, or with a fine, or both as per Section 505 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860.

Indeed, social media is not just a waste of time but it also affects our mental and physical well-being. I agree that social media has a lot of advantages but everything comes with its pros and cons. So let’s first understand what social media actually is?

WHAT IS SOCIAL MEDIA?

Social media is an internet-based technology which helps people to share their thoughts, communicate with different people around the globe, and learn new things. More than 4.5 billion people are now addicted to the taste of social media.

It enables the users to share any important document, picture, content, or video within a few seconds from one person to another. As a matter of fact, social media has made one’s life much easier and more relaxing.

Social media has enormous traction globally. Mobile applications make these platforms easily accessible. Various social media platform includes Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat and many more. However, the most used platform in India includes Facebook and YouTube, at nearly 71 and 89 per cent respectively as of January 2021.

When used properly, social media can be a valuable addition to a department’s communication strategy. As many employees have shown their interest in maintaining a social media presence in personal and professional capacities. On a professional level, you can use social media to increase your knowledge in a particular field and build your professional network by connecting with the professionals in your industry.

Jokes apart, but these days we all have a weird habit of looking at our phones 24*7. Posting stories, posts, streaks or pictures of Himalayan peaks.

Aren’t we all enjoying our lives without actually enjoying it?!

Yes, with the huge impact of social media in our lives, we have forgotten to live in the moment. We do enjoy the glamorous lives shown by the social media influencers and secretly start manifesting in it. But because of that, we aren’t able to enjoy the moment too. We should cherish and love the present moment, and everything we have right now instead of looking for more.

SOCIAL MEDIA – A BLESSING?

Sometimes social media acts as a relative who helps you meet other people at weddings!

Funny right, but in other words it helps us to communicate with others. We can find our school friends with whom we have not been in touch for so long. We can talk with our relatives who live in some other state or country. So social media helps us to talk virtually. Being physically present everywhere is not as easy as it sounds. So these social media platform helps us to stay in touch with our loved ones. It has also helped a lot of people to earn money while sitting at home.

Nowadays, YouTube, a social media platform has become so popular that even tiny tots of our nation are influenced by it and motivated to post different content on it. Many poor people are now rich just because of choosing the profession as a YouTuber. It also helps us to learn new things with a single click and learn different things also.

SOCIAL MEDIA – ISOLATION?

But in today’s environment, social media can isolate people too. We all know that we had to stay in our homes during the pandemic. During those days every single person was on his/ her phone all the time to stay close to their loved ones just because they cannot meet them. But following this habit every day for 1 year, made such a strong impact on people that after that one year they valued their phones more than their relations. These people think that they can talk with their friends online so what’s the point of going out? But the biggest mistake is not being able to realize that sitting amongst 4 walls of your room all the time can damage your mind. Keeping you away from the real world. Our time is so precious and without realizing its importance we are just wasting it.

The young generation who spends most of their time on their phones can do so much good for the world, only by focusing in the right direction. We can be the masterminds of this world and make it a better place to live for everyone. But if we keep looking at our mobile phones and discussing other people’s lives it will do no good to us. So it’s better if we learn this now, otherwise after a few years, when we won’t be able to change anything then. We will regret the things we could have done earlier but we didn’t, instead, we wasted that time on social media. Be the change you wish to bring to this world. It will be possible only when we do the things which are important and keep our physical and mental health strong.

CONCLUSION

According to a recent survey conducted by The Cigna Health Insurance Company, loneliness is at epidemic proportions. And if you suffer from mental illness, odds are that feeling lonely or disconnected from people is a factor in your depression or anxiety. But the point arises that how can we feel disconnected from people when we connect with them on social media the entire time?! Studies suggest that using Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat or other social media apps to connect with people and forge offline connections can add vitality and communion to your life. But if you are spending hours on it as a substitute for offline connections, the feeling of loneliness is likely to worsen. As rightly said, excess of everything is bad. So everything should be done to its limit.
