In China, a COVID outbreak has resulted in the closure of a province with a population of 24 million people.

Jilin province’s shutdown comes a day after China placed 17.5 million people of Shenzhen, a technological and commercial hub in the south, on lockdown for at least a week due to an increase in cases.

Following a sharp rise in Covid-19 cases, China cut off the northeastern province of Jilin, which has a population of over 24 million people, marking the first time an entire province has been cut off since the unprecedented lockdown of Hubei and its capital, Wuhan, in 2020, where the virus was first detected in late 2019.

New infections have been recorded from Shanghai in the east to Shenzhen in the south, with clusters in Beijing and populous provinces like Zhejiang. China’s authorities are rushing to manage a country-wide rise in cases with mass screenings, lockdowns, and travel restrictions.

On March 13, the national health commission (NHC) announced 1,337 new domestically transmitted Covid cases in mainland China. On Monday, 2125 instances were reported Sunday, including asymptomatic cases. According to Reuters calculations, this pushed the number this year to almost 9,000, up from 8378 in 2021.

People in Jilin province, which borders Russia and North Korea, have been instructed not to leave or travel, especially in Changchun, the provincial capital, and Jilin itself.

On Sunday, the provincial government of Jilin recorded 895 locally transmitted Covid-19 cases and 131 asymptomatic carriers. 453 fresh confirmed infections were recorded in the city of Jilin, and 430 in the provincial capital Changchun, a city with a population of over nine million people that is already under lockdown.

To contain the latest outbreak, local officials have undertaken numerous rounds of mass nucleic acid testing and constructed makeshift hospitals, according to state news agency Xinhua.

China has implemented a stringent “zero-Covid” policy, which has recently been renamed “dynamic zero,” intending to eradicate epidemics and chains of transmission through mass testing, contact tracing, quarantine, and lockdowns.

The fast-spreading Omicron form, on the other hand, has cast doubt on China’s anti-Covid laws. For example, the city of Shanghai is witnessing a severe outbreak, the worst since 2020.

“As the city grapples with its most serious Covid-19 outbreak since the pandemic began two years ago, Shanghai has suspended long-distance bus services, shut down entertainment venues, and placed hundreds of residential compounds, university campuses, and office buildings on lockdown,” the Sixth Tone website reported on Monday.

Since the first case in the current wave was discovered on March 1, it has documented over 700 infections, with 89 percent of them asymptomatic.

By Sunday, the total number of verified Covid-19 cases on the mainland, both locally and internationally, had climbed to 116,902. On Sunday, 8,531 patients were still receiving treatment, with eight of them in critical condition. Since the disease’s emergence in late 2019, 4636 people have died from the virus on the mainland.

Our emotional and physical health has been harmed by these catastrophes. Teens’ lives have been disrupted by pandemic-related lifestyle changes, with many experiencing disruptions to their typical routines. Researchers discovered that from the onset of the epidemic, parents of teenagers have reported that their child has displayed indicators of a new or worsening mental health condition. The pandemic’s restrictions have been felt all around the country. Restrictions have resulted in months of virtual learning, more time away from friends, and the cancellation of crucial social activities like sports, school performances, graduations, and proms for teenagers.

Teens experienced Anxiety and Depression

Parents reported that the pandemic has harmed their children’s social ties, with 64 percent reporting that their children text, use social media (56 percent), play online games (43 percent), and talk on the phone (35 percent) every day or virtually every day. Anxiety and depression were found to be lower in urban settings than in rural locations. Fear, worry, and other emotions were higher among children in high-epidemic locations. Peer groups and social interactions are important aspects of adolescent development. During the pandemic, however, these options were restricted. Pre-lockdown learning for children and teenagers was mostly one-on-one engagement with mentors and peer groups around the world. Over 91 percent of the world’s student population has been significantly impacted by nationwide school and institution closures.

For long periods of time, the absence of a structured school setting causes disruption in routine, boredom, and a lack of fresh ideas for engaging in various academic and extracurricular activities. Because of the long-term change in their routine, these youngsters have grown to be more clinging, attention-seeking, and reliant on their parents. It’s expected that children would avoid returning to school once the lockdown is lifted, and that they will have trouble re-establishing contact with their mentors once the schools reopen. As a result, the restriction of their activity may have a long-term negative impact on their general psychological well-being. Worst of all, when schools are closed and legal and preventative services are unavailable, children are rarely in a position to report violence, abuse, or harm, especially if they live in abusive households.

Impact on children during Isolation and Quarantine

Infection with COVID-19 manifests itself variably in children and teenagers. Nonetheless, cases of infection in youngsters have been documented all across the world, resulting in children being isolated. Furthermore, a single parent or both parents are frequently afflicted and quarantined. Children are removed from their parents in either situation. Isolated children require extra care since they may be at risk of developing mental health issues as a result of the pain caused by parental separation.

Separation from key caregivers can make a child more susceptible and put their mental health in jeopardy. Emotionally bottled-up distress can manifest itself in the form of emotional fear or outwardly manifested behaviour in children. They may feel alone or lonely because they lack the knowledge and maturity to comprehend the consequences of the present epidemic crisis in their small environment.

Role of Healthcare Workers in Pandemic towards Teenagers

The role of mental health care specialists, such as clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, and psychiatric social workers, is critical during times of extreme stress when the mental health of children and adolescents around the world is directly or indirectly damaged.

In order to replace in-person examinations and interventions, telemental health compatibility is required. Providers of mental health services should strive to reach out to the broader populace. They must work to develop and disseminate audio-visual content about healthy parenting, mental health awareness, stigma reduction, mental health hygiene, health behaviour promotion, and psycho-educational material about children’s and adolescents’ mental health.
The need for an integrated and innovative mental health care delivery is critical. Coordination with people who play a vital role in the mental health care of children and adolescents, such as parents, physicians, teachers, school counsellors, community volunteers, non-governmental organisations, police, and so on. It should be informed about the mental health problem and given brief training in basic psychological support and psychological first aid.
Providing online training for teachers or developing materials for school teachers and counselors on mental health promotion, life skills training, parent coordination, and referral to mental health experts.
Clinical psychologists should develop and implement tele-based or in-person short-term-focused behavioural interventions for the management of known conditions in children [e.g., ADHD, autism, intellectual disabilities] that are primarily parent-focused and initiated using digital and electronic media.
Psychiatrists must carefully consider the dangers and advantages of psychotropic medications for children and adolescents, such as antidepressants, anxiolytics, anticonvulsants, and other medications, and, if possible, make arrangements for those who are unable to do so.
Mental health professionals must conduct longitudinal and developmental studies on the short- and long-term mental health effects of the COVID 19 epidemic and lockdown on children and adolescents.

Despite the fact that the rate of COVID-19 infection among young children and adolescents is low, the stress they face makes their state extremely sensitive. The nature and scope of this impact are determined by a number of risk variables, including developmental age, educational status, pre-existing mental health conditions, being economically disadvantaged, and being isolated due to infection or fear of infection. Clinginess disrupted sleep, nightmares, poor appetite, inattentiveness, and substantial separation are all symptoms in young children, according to studies. Prevention, promotion, and interventions according to the public mental health system should be the focus of the healthcare system and policies in order to address the mental health requirements of the general public while taking regional contextual elements into account.

Healthcare Professionals worldwide are worried about this increasing trend of obesity cases. Along with the increased cases of COVID-19, diet and lifestyle conditions imposed a great risk of obesity both on adults and children. All this increases co-morbidities and deaths because of COVID-19.

COVID-19 pandemic has posed a significant global burden, around the globe. COVID-19 pandemic emerged in December 2019 when the first case came into existence, since then it has caused destruction worldwide. It is a contagious disease that spreads from one to another through both direct and indirect contact. It is known to have originated from China, specifically Wuhan. It started in China covering almost every country. It was spreading even quicker than the fire in the forest, leading to more and more hospitalizations and deaths. To slow down its spread, every country around the globe imposed lockdown, banned flights, and applied curfews where no one was allowed to go out. Only essential items like medicine and fruits, vegetables, and general stores were allowed to work that too only for a few hours a day. Along with this, COVID appropriate behavior to be followed such as-

Frequent use of hand sanitizers or hand washing
Social Distancing (2 gaj ki doori)
Mask on while going out
Avoid going out unnecessarily

Initially, one-third of the world’s population, which is nearly 3 billion people, was locked down to break the chain of infection by physical isolation. It has been found from a pandemic that apart from its direct effect i.e. infection; it has indirectly shown a change in the behaviors at individual level such as education, isolation, unemployment, and income but also at the health system level. Apart from this, one should also focus as patients for cancer, cardiac diseases, or any other chronic disorder other than COVID-19, have faced the worst consequences even at the cost of their death due to the implementation lockdown. All the elective surgeries were postponed and only emergencies were entertained along with COVID-19 cases. It has also affected the sleep and eating patterns of people which has a direct impact on their physical well-being. There was limited access to fresh fruits and vegetables, less exercising, and more consumption of unhealthy food. Also, many studies have been conducted which showed more screen time, more hours of sleep, and an additional meal per day. These activities harm maintaining a healthy weight as they lead to increased weight followed by an increase in BMI particularly in this period. Obesity is most common in patients suffering from COVID as it is linked with the severity of the disease. Apart from isolations, factors such as age, gender, and underlying conditions need to be considered. Irrespective of COVID-19, it is associated with severe chronic diseases such as COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), CVD (cardiovascular disorders), diabetes, CKD (chronic kidney disease). Continuous isolation due to lockdown reduced physical activity which ultimately leads to obesity, followed by increasing risk of a pandemic.

Obesity can be defined as excessive accumulation of fat anywhere in the body which is a risk to the health of the human being. Worldwide the burden of obesity has shown a steady increase and a major factor contributing to it is a modern or sedentary lifestyle. This got more aggravated during the lockdown period. It has not affected adults but children also as no physical work out were allowed because schools were closed leading to zero physical activity. Obesity is increasing to a greater extent around the globe, which is of public health importance and COVID-19 risk. As per past studies done, the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes and CVD is 2% and 10% higher respectively when associated with obesity. Weight gain is known to be the most important independent factor for chronic disorders. Treatment and management of these disorders are both directly and indirectly hampered due to this pandemic and so obesity has shown its prevalence to a great extent. There are three main risks with obesity and are as follows-

Risk of chronic disorders
More susceptible to infections (affecting innate and adaptive immunity)
Long-term COVID-19 after effects on obese population.

Obesity is considered a modifiable risk factor for COVID-19. It is highly related to mortality. The adipose tissue, which is fat tissue, is rich in ACE2 (angiotensin-converting enzyme 2) receptors that help in accumulation of the COVID virus. It leads to a greater viral load followed by viremia. It alters the immune function of the body by increasing susceptibility to infections.

Recommended measures to control or reduce the increasing trend of COVID-19 are as follows-

Consume a well-balanced diet- Dietary intake of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lentils, and nuts. Cut on junk foods, carbonated drinks, refined sugars.
Promote access and availability of healthy food.
Consume 3-4 liters of water per day.
Yoga and meditation to get good mental peace by de-stressing yourself.
Perform indoor activities like Zumba/Aerobics to stay physically active.
Encourage mild physical activity with COVID-appropriate behavior or with physical limitations.
Target social determinants of health also such as overcrowded places, sedentary lifestyle, low level of education, poverty, etc.
Awareness about obesity to the general public.
Ensure the health of patients with chronic diseases by providing treatment on time.
mHealth (mobile health) plays an important role to reduce in-person visits that further helps in breaking the chain of infection.

Earlier The Apex Court urged the State Government on Monday 19 July to respond to COVID-19’s restrictions on three-day breaks. There were considerable disagreements regarding its relaxation, the opposition and the Indian Medical Association have criticised the move of the administration. Non-essential stores in the state, which was opposed by the merchants, could only open on the alternate days. In the easy way to lock down, the state authorities allowed textiles, shops for footwear, jewellery, fantastic stores, shops for domestic and electronic equipment and all kinds of shops that sold essential items to open in the areas of category A, B and C on 18th, 19th and 20th July from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. These stores can only operate in regions category D on 19 July. Kerala has been classified by the test positive rate (TPR) into three groups – A, B, C, D – and the transmission rate is shown. In the growing incidents of Corona, the Supreme Court voiced its unhappiness at the government of Kerala’s relaxing of the lockdown in Bakrid. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court said: “The right to live, the most valuable life right for the people of India, cannot be violated by any sort of coercion. Anyone including the public can notify us and take action accordingly if something is unfortunate.

Places of worship were authorised with maximum 40 individuals on exceptional occasions of celebration. Shooting of films should be authorised as per the rules conforming to COVID regulations. The public was warned that people visiting stores and other places may, as far as possible, belong to the category recovered from at least one dosage of COVID/vaccine and observe rigorous protocols. The government of Kerala delayed public holidays from Tuesday to Wednesday for Eid-Ul-Ada (Bakrid).

The holidays are valid for all state government bodies, including all public sector organisations, schools and institutions under the 1881 Negotiable Instruments Act, as GAD Chief Secretary K R. Jyothi Lal noted in a publication on Monday.

‘It is a terrible fact that the government, under pressure from corporate organisations, decides on crucial matters such as easing in lock-downs. In such circumstances, if the rate of spreading corona infection is increased owing to the relaxation in Bakrid and any individual brings this question before the court, the court will not hesitate to act. The Supreme Court stated: ‘We instruct Kerala, together with Article 21 of the Constitution, to give due consideration to Article 44 and to remember our Kanvad Yatra judgement.’ However, no decision has been passed by the court to annul the Kerala Government’s notice of relief in the Bakrid shutdown. Now is the last day of lockdown leisure. Vikas Singh, a senior lawyer appeared for the petitioner and stated that the Court might pass an order in the case.

The Supreme Court had issued a harsh observation on the Kerala administration’s move, earlier this Monday, to modify Bakrid’s regulations. A bench of Justice RF Nariman said the government’s move to relieve the regulations is surprising at a time when there is a medical emergency in the state. The State administration plays with the people’s life. The administration looks prepared to kill individuals in this vital moment. BKD Nambir submitted a request in this case by defender Preeti Singh. Actually, from 18 to 20 July, the Kerala administration agreed in Bakrid to relax under corona rules.
