Johari Window Model | Communication Theory
Johari window is a very beautifully designed concept used to define human interactions. It was given by Joseph Luft and Harry Ingam. A window which we used to draw in our drawing class was utilized to understand the topic of communication.
In the diagram each square i.e. the quadrant is known with different names.
1st Quadrant – Arena/ Open Quadrant
2nd Quadrant – Facade/ Hidden Quadrant
3rd Quadrant – Blindspot
4th Quadrant – Unknown
Arena Quadrant
This quadrant consists of those features which we also know about ourself and others also know about us.
For Example – Name
Facade Quadrant
Known to self (participant) and not known to others (peers) , this quadrant consists of those features which you know about yourself but peers (others) are not aware of.
For Example – Favourite ice cream
Blindspot Quadrant
When the peers are aware about it but the participants are not aware about it .
For Example : Our moods
Unknown Quadrant
Behavior which neither participant knows about himself nor peers are aware of.
For Example: any Hidden Talent
Here the Johari Window works by shifting these quadrants.
For Example:
In case of Arena and Facade Quadrant. The qualities in Arena quadrant are the one which is known to participants as well as peers while Facade Quadrant is the one where there are qualities which are not known to others but we know about ourselves. So when the peers start to learn about us the line of 1st and 2nd Quadrants will start moving downwards and as soon as the other person gets to know all the things which we know about ourselves or the participants know about himself, both the quadrant would merge with each other where all the qualities would be those which even the participants know about themselves and also the peers know about him.
In the case of Arena quadrant and Blindspot Quadrant, when the participle learns about his qualities from the peers the line will start moving towards right as he knows qualities about himself which he didn’t know. Here again the 2nd and 3rd Quadrants would merge, depicting that all the qualities of that person which he knows about himself is known to others as well.
Same way all the quadrants can be merged accordingly.
Making the model of Johari Window an interesting way to learn.
