Mumbai Police arrests Arnab Goswami Editor-in-Chief of Republic TV
Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami has been arrested by the Raigad Police in the morning of 4th November.
The Editor-in-Chief is arrested in connection with an old abetment to suicide case. It is contended that he has been arrested for abetting suicide of a 53 year old interior designer. According to the police the architect and his mother committed suicide due to non-payment of dues by the Republic TV two years ago.
Arnab Goswami has been arrested under Section 306 and Section 34 of the Indian Penal Code, said Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU) Inspector Sanchin Vaje.
It is claimed that nearly 10 policemen entered the house of the editor-in-chief along with the AK 47 gun; assaulted him and forcibly demanded Arnab to come out.
Several Union Ministers along with Prakash Javedkar who is the Information and Broadcasting Minister condemned the act of Mumbai Police as an attack on freedom of press calling it a situation of emergency.
Home Minister Amit Shah condemns the act stating : “Congress and its allies have slammed democracy once again.
Blatant misuse of state power against Republic TV and Arnab Goswami is an attack on freedom of press and the 4th pillar of democracy.
It reminds us of the emergency. This attack on free press must be and will be opposed”.
Few days earlier Arnab and other senior employees of Republic TV were also summoned in the case by Mumbai Police on TRP Scam, where it is alleged that the channel was involved in manipulating TRPs of Television Rating Points by bribing households to increase their viewership . It was also involved in several issues relating to mob lynchging in Palghar of three monks and criticism for handling the Suicide Case of Sushasnt Singh Rajput.
