Gunman killed children and teacher at Texas School

A teen gunman opened fire at a Texas elementary school, killing 19 students and a teacher.

The killing in Uvalde, Texas, a small town about an hour from the Mexican border, is the latest in a string of violent shootings in the United States. Where outrage over the cycle of gun violence has failed to inspire action.

At a press conference, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the:- 18-year-old gunman shot his grandmother before ditching his vehicle and approaching the school with a handgun and maybe a rifle.

The suspect, Salvador Ramos, a resident, and a US citizen, was also slain, according to the governor, who added that “it is suspected that responding officers killed him.”

Abbott added, “He shot and killed brutally and incomprehensibly.”

President Joe Biden

President Joe Biden spoke from the White House less than an hour after returning from a five-day trip to Asia punctuated by deadly killings in the United States. After years of inaction, he begged for action to combat gun violence. Blaming gun manufacturers and their allies for delaying legislation in Washington.

“When in the name of God will we stand up to the gun lobby?” Biden expressed his feelings. “How come we’re willing to put up with this carnage?” Why do we continue to allow this to happen?”

The White House ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of the victims. Whose deaths shocked a nation still reeling from the tragedy at Sandy Hook.

Three adults were also killed in the incident, according to Texas State Senator Roland Gutierrez. However, it was unclear whether this included the shooter.

Small groups of children were seen weaving around parked cars as well as yellow buses, some holding hands. As they escaped the school, which teachers and students aged seven to ten years old, under police supervision.

Earlier Encounter

It was the bloodiest school shooting since the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in Connecticut, which murdered 20 children and six adults.

Parents have been advised not to pick up their children from Robb Elementary, which serves over 500 predominantly Hispanic and economically disadvantaged pupils in grades two through four.

The massacre in Texas comes after a string of mass shootings across the United States this month.

On May 14, an 18-year-old man opened fire in a Buffalo, New York grocery store, killing ten people.

The self-declared white nationalist, wearing full body armor and holding an AR-15 rifle, live-streamed his attack. Purportedly targeting the store because of the substantial African American population in the area.

The next day, a man barricaded the door of a church in Laguna Woods, California, and opened fire on the congregation’s Taiwanese-American members, killing one and injuring five others.

Statements

“Pupils must be accounted for before they are released to your care,” the school said on its website shortly after the incident. “You will be called to pick up students once all are accounted for.”

– “It happens nowhere else, “remarked Vice President Kamala Harris in the aftermath of the catastrophe”. Our hearts are always breaking.

Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, a pro-gun rights Republican, said he and his wife were “raising in prayer the children and families in the tragic incident in Uvalde.”

Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut, where the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy occurred. He made an emotional plea for decisive action to prevent further violence.

“This isn’t a foregone conclusion; these children were not unlucky. We are unique to this country and occur nowhere else. Nowhere else do tiny kids go to school fearful of being shot that day “On the Senate floor in Washington, Murphy stated.

“I’m here to plead, to physically get down on my hands and knees and ask my colleagues to find a way ahead. Work with us to pass legislation that makes this less likely.”

Conclusion

Despite repeated mass shootings, several attempts in Congress to modify gun laws have failed. Leaving the states as well as local governments to enhance or decrease their restrictions.

The National Rifle Association has been a vocal opponent of tougher gun legislation in the United States. Abbott and Cruz are scheduled to appear at a prominent lobbying conference in Houston, Texas later this week.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). There were 19,350 firearm homicides in the United States in 2020, up nearly 35% from 2019.
