India sets Guinness World Record for building longest Bituminous Road on NH-53 in just 5 days
On 7 June 2022, India celebrated a proud moment by constructing the world’s longest piece of Bituminous concrete. On NH-53 which was achieved by Raj Path Infracon Pvt. Ltd. and Jagdish Kadam. The road is built between the Amravati and Akola districts of Maharashtra on NH53. The team began its construction on June 3, 2022, at 7:27AM and completed the 75km long stretch on June 7, 2022, at 5PM. Thus, the time recorded to complete the longest road is 105 hours and 33 minutes. This is a 75 km single-lane road which is estimated to be equivalent to 35km of two-lane paved shoulder road.
The initial idea of building the 75km long single-lane road on NH-53 was taken into consideration by National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) consultants as well as concessionaires in collaboration with Raj Path Infracon Pvt. Ltd. and Jagdish Kadam
What is meant by Bituminous Concrete?
Bituminous or Asphalt concrete is a mixture of petroleum by-products and gravel used for paving to form a smooth and permanent surface. It is used for paving roads, driveways and parking lots. The binding agent used is known as ‘bitumen’ from which it got its name.
This material is different from the normal concrete and contains no cement. While most cement-based surfaces are white or grey, bituminous concrete is known for its distinctive black appearance. It is also known as Asphalt in many parts of the world.
A Big Achievement
On receiving such a big honour, Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari commented;
“Proud moment for the entire nation! Feel very happy to congratulate our exceptional Team NHAI, Consultants and Concessionaire, Rajpath Infracon Pvt. Ltd. and Jagdish Kadam, on achieving the Guinness World Record of laying 75 Km continuous Bituminous Concrete Road in a single lane on NH-53 section between Amravati and Akola. I would specially thank our engineers as well as workers who toiled day and night to achieve this extraordinary feat.”
Nitin Gadkari
He also shared some photos on Twitter showing the commendable work done by the workers. Nitin Gadkari also said, “ Amravati to Akola section is part of National Highway 53, which is an important corridor.” It connects major cities like Kolkata, Raipur, Nagpur, Akola, Dhule and Surat. It passes through a mineral-rich region of our country. I have been informed that 35 percent of the work is completed on this stretch, from Amravati to Akola. And nearly 65 per cent in Akola to Chikli section. Therefore, with this achievement, there will be a great relief to commuters. The movement of traffic will be smooth, as well as the travel time will be reduced.
This record was previously achieved by Public Works Authority -ASHGHAL (Qatar) on 27th February 2019. The road was a part of the Al-Khor Expressway and it took 10 days to complete the task.
