which stream should you opt to make a career in psychology?
Miss Nikita enlightened us regarding the streams which will lead to the field of psychology. Basically, for entering into the psychology field as a professional, there’s no one defined stream, that should be opted in class 11th and 12th. Students from all streams, including Humanities, Commerce and science can opt Psychology as their major.
The various arenas within career in psychology
As asked by the host, Ms. Vrinda Agrawal, about the different courses in Psychology, Miss Nikita mentioned a few courses like Clinical Psychology, Forensic Psychology, counselling Psychology, Cognitive psychology, Health psychology, Sports Psychology, Business Psychology etc.
- Clinical psychology
Clinical psychology integrates science, theory, and practice in order to understand, predict and relieve problems with adjustment, disability, and discomfort. It promotes adaption , adjustment, and personal development.
- Forensic psychology
Forensic psychology involves applying psychology to criminal investigation and the law. A forensic psychologist practices psychology as a science within the criminal justice system and civil courts. It involves assessing the psychological factors that might influence a case or behaviour and presenting the findings in court.
- Cognitive psychology
Cognitive psychology investigates internal mental processes, such as problem solving, memory, learning, and language. It looks at how people think, perceive, communicate, remember, and learn.
- Counselling psychology
Counselling psychology is a psychological specialty that encompasses research and applied work in several broad domains: counselling process and outcome; supervision and training; career development and counselling; and prevention and health.
- Health Psychology
Health psychology examines how biological, social and psychological factors influence health and illness. Health psychologists use psychological science to promote health, prevent illness and improve health care systems.
- Sport Psychology
Sports psychology is the study of how psychological factors influence sports, athletic performance, exercise, and physical activity. Sports psychologists investigate how participating in sports can improve health and well-being
- Business Psychology
Business Psychology (also referred to as organisational psychology) is defined as the practice of understanding and improving the working life of employees. It combines an understanding of the science of human behaviour with experience of the world of work to gain effective and sustainable performance for both individuals and organisations.
Involved admission procedure
Majorly Universities or Colleges for Bachelors take admission for Psychology on merit based criteria whereas there are many colleges and institutions which take entrances for admission, thus the admission process varies and it depends on which university / college one is opting for. For example, To get admission in University of Delhi, Merit based criteria is the way.
Some good or top colleges for opting psychology were mentioned by the guest in this session, University of Delhi, Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi etc.
For Entrance Exam, General Psychology named exam is Given which is based on general and basic knowledge one should have.
Degree v/s Diploma
If one is pursuing Psychology to become a psychologist one has to complete his/her degree, which is done through the process of Graduation in Psychology then Masters in it and so on.
But one is not willing to pursue psychology for career, and just for education advancement, then Diploma in Psychology is also a way.
Psychology is a good career choice in india. Gradually the demand for trained psychologists is increasing in India. In India, branches of psychology are well-known are Clinical, Counseling, Industrial, Educational (school) and Forensic Psychology. Clinical Psychology is one of the established fields of psychology in india.

- BA/BSc
- MA/MSc
- MPhil (recommended if you choose clinical psychology. Otherwise you can do PhD directly)
- PhD
The scope and a good career choice solely depends on the person who is into the field professionally. It is an individualistic choice and opinion.
The only answer to your question is that due to the widespread alertness in the society, people are aware of this field, but mind you people or rather society is still sceptical about visiting doctors for mental health related issues.
The more well established you are and more people are aware of your services, the more they would be likely to visit you.
