Introduction
A visual masterpiece and a work of art. Animations are there starting from television to an advertisement. Dr. Binish Desai who is an entrepreneur famous for waste recycling said in an interview that he was a huge fan of Dexter’s laboratory and other animated shows. Today he is famous for making bricks from masks. Isn’t this interesting? An animated show inspired an entrepreneur to make bricks from masks.
In India, cartoons were considered as kids’ entertainment. Especially after the launching of cartoons in the Doordarshan channel and after launching of the cartoon network channel. Tom and Jerry’s show portrayed many things in a satirical manner like using guns and gun powders to capture a mouse often we can see Tom using these things. Jerry too can be seen confronting Tom when he is pointing a gun towards him.
This show depicted many things which were popular in that era like people flocking to cities from a village in search of employment. In one episode they depicted guillotine where Tom, Jerry and Nibbles were shown as French. They were even criticized for portraying racial stereotypes, Joseph Barbera stated that they were just showing what was in the society at that time. We can see Tom and Jerry in different forms, ever noticed? Well, it’s because Tom and Jerry’s cartoons were launched by many people and all drew differently like Chuck Jones.
Japanese Cartoons
Comics too played an important role in animation, many Japanese cartoons were manga comics like Doraemon, Ninja Hattori, Kiteretsu, Perman. Doraemon gained popularity in India after the launching of the Hungama channel. Though the Animax channel aired many anime(s) still it couldn’t gain popularity like Hungama. Japanese cartoon drawings were very different from that of American cartoons like Mickey Mouse and Looney Toons. Japanese cartoons also depicted what was there in the society and even portrayed many things in an interesting manner like science, history, geography, etc. Students getting failing in exams and being scared of telling it to their parents was portrayed humorously like Nobita in Doraemon. Japan created its genre of animation called anime, anime is very popular today because of its interesting content.
Well, many cartoons from Japan are known for obscenity and this was heavily criticized by parents.
Japanese cartoons are very interesting and will make science fun. Well thanks to the Indian television industry where television serials portray strange content, people say that Japanese cartoons were a slap for soap operas. Well let’s say a serial’s name ‘Daal Mein Kuch kaala Nahi hein’ and it portrays vague plots and worst contents. I mean what’s wrong if a kid is learning science in animated serials. Japanese cartoons declined in India due to the soap opera mafia.
American Animation
Animation depicted cultures like American culture were depicted like “The Gold Rush” were depicted in cartoons like “The Looney Tunes Show”. Baby looney tunes targeted children, this cartoon was used to teach children good habits and good manners. Japanese animations depicted Japanese culture and they played a key role in promoting their culture among the children. The world war was shown in many American cartoons and Japanese cartoons. In Doraemon, there were a few episodes where Mr. Nobi struggling in his childhood were mentioned at the time of war and the aftermath of the world war was also shown.
Squirrel and Hedgehog, a North Korean animated series were used to increase patriotism among the children of North Korea. Many characters in this cartoon are said to have portrayed Japanese, US, Russian, North Korean and Chinese.
Animations in India
Indian animated series Chhota Bheem became very popular in the Indian subcontinent. Thanks to Mr. Rajiv Chilaka (Founder of Green Gold Animation) who created this cartoon. Much before Chhota Bheem for cartoon Network Green Gold created animated series based on the life of Lord Krishna which became a hit in India. The Legend of Prince Rama was an animated movie created by Yugo Sako which was released in 1992, much fake news was spread that Mr. Yugo Sako was creating a new Ramayana and the film faced many issues. This was one of the best-animated movies based on the epic Ramayana.
Animation is still ailing in India! People consider animations as a Kid’s entertainment. Many theoretical releases of Indian animated series bombed at the box office. Animations are there starting in classrooms to big corporate industry. Animators should be encouraged in India and let the animations depict our culture and traditions in a good manner.
The problem with animations is due to their artificial lights causing harm to our eyes! Well, blue lights from machines cause big harm to our eyes. Animations initially started from hand-drawn drawings and now all animations are created using machines. The world is moving fast and technology is also rising and in the future, we may be introduced to an animated series that will not cause much harm.
