In just five days, India’s box office collections had increased by 80%. According to the movie booking service BookMyShow; it accounted for 49 percent of the film’s entire opening weekend box office income. By the end of the first week, the surprise smash had sold over 4 million tickets on BookMyShow.

Within a week of its release, The Kashmir Files, a Hindi film based on the evacuation and massacres of Kashmiri Pandits in the Valley in the 1990s, surpassed the $100 million mark.

In just five days, India’s box office collections had increased by 80%.

“The film started with decent advance sales for the first day,” said Ashish Saksena, chief operating officer, Cinemas, BookMyShow. “However, the rate at which the audience uptake has grown since Day One has been unimaginable, scaling up significantly at the end of the first day on Friday itself,” he added.
As a result, additional movie theatres throughout the country have added shows and screens, resulting in a 7x increase in the number of screens accessible for the film by the conclusion of its first full week.

Audiences in Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Surat, and Vadodara were among the first to rush to movie theatres to see the film.

“The performance of The Kashmir Files has not just brought the entire industry to life. But has broken the shackles in more than one way while creating new records,” said Alok Tandon, CEO, INOX Leisure.

INOX has now sold more than 1.5 million tickets, the most of any movie chain in the country; according to Tandon. “As a result, for the first time, a movie has performed better than the day before for seven days in a row. This film’s success has given the industry a great platform, putting any fears or concerns to rest, whether they were regarding Covid-19, OTT issues, or the industry’s future” and so on.

PVR Pictures further stated that the picture has outperformed all other films presently showing in theatres.

It received over 90% occupancy rates on its first weekend of availability. Many BJP-ruled states have proclaimed the film tax-free, and many leaders have tweeted their support. Last Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited with the film’s crew in New Delhi. Many private firms have also provided free movie tickets to employees. And some state governments have extended leave to staff who desire to see the film.
